I’m on a roll!

I ran 3 miles on Friday!  I didn’t get up in the morning to run because I was feeling sick.  I kept getting worse feeling as the day went on until after lunch.  So since I was feeling better by the late afternoon/early evening, I went for a run!  Last time I ran that far was December 6th, 2011… I thought I must have ran much slower but I actually ran almost 5 minutes faster!  Its funny how little I thought of myself.  I tried to think less of myself but the running proved me wrong!  What take that!

Today I ran 2 miles to start my week out right.  Wednesday I’ll run 3 miles and Friday 4 miles.  I ran both miles under 11 minutes each!  The first mile was closer to 10 and the last mile was closer to 11 but they were still both under 11 each!  Pretty good feeling knowing I did it again, beat my best.  I’ll bet back down to 9 minute miles eventually but I”m pround of less than 11 right now.

 24 Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! 25 All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 26 So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. 27 I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

My Mantra

I just ran 2 miles today.  I prayed and ran.  I wanted to push myself but kinda let myself slack.  I was praying for some friends back in NC/GA and then started in on the ones here in DeRidder.  I noticed I was getting slower.  So I prayed asking God to motivate me to run a little faster, to pick up the pace. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but God has a funny sense of humor.  He sure did motivate me this morning.  With a little downpour of rain.  Haha.  Be careful what you ask for right?  But in that rain as I was pushing myself, I realized two things: 1. I always have the strength to go a little harder, faster, stronger, better 2. I let little things hold me back.  I’m talking about running, but also in everything else.  I think my running right now just reflects how complacent I can get.  I KNOW I can run faster and longer.  I’ve ran 12 miles before.  I’ve run 9 minute miles too.  But my excuse yesterday was that I hadn’t run in a while.  Many runners can talk themselves out of a good run.  They admit defeat before they start.  To fight against those mind games, some runners use a mantra to encourage them during a run.  Mantra is a practice often used in Buddhism and other Indian religions.  It is one sound or  word or phrase used to create a change.  I wanted to come up with a mantra for running to see if it could encourage me.  Since I know that many of my hold ups are all in my head I needed something that reminded me to leave those silly thoughts behind.  I also wanted something to use when I was in the middle of a long run and starting to get weary.  I found a bible verse to help me come up with a good mantra.  Hebrews 12:1-3 says 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  So my mantra will be THROW OFF! and PERSEVERANCE!  When I have doubts or I notice I’m running to slow I will say THROW OFF!  When I start to grow weary and drag my feet I will say PERSEVERANCE!  I noticed that I can use that mantra in my everyday life too.  How many times do I not do something or do it too conservatively because I get an idea in my head that I won’t do it good enough? THROW OFF!  How many times do I stop doing something (like a blog, or a crochet project) or drag my feet through it because I’m weary?  PERSEVERANCE.  Remember Hebrews 12:2 says that FOR THE JOY SET BEFORE HIM he endured the cross… JOY!  🙂

Getting back on the horse…

Well, I’m not actually riding a horse, but running again.  I took a very long sabbatical from running and back on January 15th I declared it on this blog that I would be running again.  I’ve only ran a total of 6 miles since then.  I’m going out again tomorrow to run a whopping 2 miles, and then on Friday to run 3 miles.  I’m working it up slowly but after such a long time away, I need to do it slow.  I never thought it would take as much effort to do it like this.  My run is even slower.  At least I am not trying to stop or walk.  But its not too bad considering that I’ve only been running a few years and had a baby in the middle of it.  This slow running momma is not giving up.

missing it

I haven’t ran in a while… I won’t even look at my Endomondo (running app) to see when it was I last ran. I miss it badly but am unmotivated, and tired. Life was in the way for a while but it always does that. I used to wake up early to run. I don’t know what it is that has made me not run for so long, but it needs to change. BUT how? I will start it on Monday and see how it works… I need the running because its my free time. Its also energy that I need! Plus it makes me healthy and fit to keep up with these children.

If I could run right now…

I would.  4 miles, 5 miles, 6 even… But I didn’t wake up this morning to run!  Why not?  Snoozed the alarm too many times! But my next run will be Saturday.  Its my long run!  Not sure if I will do 9 or 10.  Need a race to run soon to make this half marathon training worthwhile!  Anyone know of any races close to DeRidder, LA?  Maybe a turkey trot?

don’t overdo it

SO… I did my 4 miles on Saturday and had a really good time.  Even Monday 3 miler was a good time. I skipped today’s 4 miles because I went out with my best friend Kim walking.  We did a good 3.15 miles.  My legs were killing me. But tomorrow morning instead of 3 mile run, I will run 4.  So it will be like I swapped the two days. Then rest on Friday and run 5 on Saturday.  can’t overdo it in week 2…

A Good Run

We ran 3 more miles today.  It was very cool here in Louisiana.  I ran my best run in a long time.  First mile 12:07, 2nd in 12:30, and 3rd in 12:20.  Jonathan ran with me and I kept my pace steady.  We also ran a different way.  Sometimes you have to change it up.  I remember passing the police station in town and thought in my head that one would come out and make a crack about us speeding… HAHA NOT!  Today was a good day for a run..  Tomorrow is a break for running and Saturday is a 4 miler!  This weeks total will be 13 but next week will be 15 miles.  My Saturdays will be full for a while with all these long runs.

Free Your Endorphins

5*4*3*2*1 Free your endorphins.  I laugh every time my running application on my phone does that little count down.  True to that saying, every time I run, endorphins are unleashed.  That doesn’t mean I want to run every time.  Or that every time I run I enjoy it.  But after that run, I feel so much better. Take today for instance.  Today was my second run of the week for the half-marathon training.  I was not feeling the run.  I pushed through it but could literally feel my body slowing down as time went on.  I did my first mile in 12:09.  But the second mile was in 13:40… so slow.  If  I followed the same pattern as Monday, my third mile would be even slower. However, I remembered something I had read.  I started a run/walk method right after the 2nd mile.  Run for some time then walk for a minute.  Run, walk, run, walk, and finish with a run that should be faster than if I had tried to run the whole way. I believe it worked.  I ran the last mile in 13:41.

I think running can be a great big old metaphor for life.  Sometimes you don’t wanna.  But you push through it because the run is good practice or training for the race in the end. Running as training makes the running you do in the race better.  Same thing in life.  And at the end of the run, the endorphins are all free.  You feel (tired) but so ready to go.  Almost invincible.  And when the next big run comes around, you are ready to go.  Sometimes you learn to take walk breaks on the way so that you don’t tire out at the end.

**Whelp I’m done with my preaching.  Tomorrow I run 3 more miles and then Friday rest, and Saturday 4 miles.  Total of 13 miles this week-almost a whole half marathon.  I do have til November 20th to get ready so no need to freak out now. 🙂

The Slow Running Momma

Yesterday my husband and I started training for a half marathon in November.  I have run 5k’s and one 10k but never a half marathon.  We set out on the run and it was almost noon!  Too late to start in this Louisiana heat! Jon took the jogging stroller with our 4 month old daughter in it and I followed behind.  You see, I am much, much slower than my husband.  In fact, when I run with him, I run faster. We ran 3.1 miles.  I finished in 39 minutes.  That is slower than my first 5k.  But my first 5k was in NC where it was much cooler! I finished the run and am looking forward to tomorrow’s run (which should be in the morning).  Today was our rest day and boy was I lazy.  I even indulged in fried pickles.  But I am working on eating better so that I am healthy. I also need to eat healthy to be a good example to my kids. I love vegetables but they still haven’t found that same love for vegetables! I have a long way to go to get into shape for the half marathon, but I am looking forward to it!
